Youth Basketball in Brooklyn, NY

Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs of New York City, but when it comes to basketball, it is much more. There are over 2.5 million residents and if Brooklyn were still to be a city of its own, it would be the fourth most populous in the United States. Yet, Brooklyn’s one major professional sports team is the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA. The Nets moved into Brooklyn in 2012, and play their home games at Barclays Center in Prospect Heights. In 2020, the New York Liberty of the WNBA were sold to the Nets ownership (BSE Global) and moved to the Barclays Center as well.

The Barclays Center hosts three popular college basketball tournaments each year: Barclays Center Classic, Coaches vs Cancer Classic, and Legends Classic. The arena also hosts men’s basketball tournament for the Atlantic 10 Conference, as well as NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament games.

Famous basketball players from Brooklyn include: Carmelo Anthony, Billy Cunningham, Connie Hawkins, Red Holzman, Mark Jackson, Bernard King, Nancy Lieberman, Stephon Marbury, Chris Mullin and Lenny Wilkens. While the “greatest basketball player of all time” Michael Jordan grew up in North Carolina, he was born in Brooklyn!

Beyond basketball, Brooklyn has a rich sports history that includes the Brooklyn Dodgers. With the Dodgers, Jackie Robinson became the first African-American player in Major League Baseball. Although the team moved to Los Angeles in 1957, baseball returned to Brooklyn with the minor league’s Brooklyn Cyclones in 2001.
